From our rock-hostel drive to Pfaffendorf, where the slender rock Barbarine greets and further on to Gohrisch with its nearby caves to Bad Schandau. There you can visit the Nationalparkhaus with informations about the specifics of our bizarre rocky landscape and in the distance you will see the famous Schrammsteine mountains. Leave near the Toskana Therme the Elbe valley, into the small romantic valley of the Kirnitzsch river with interesting water mills. Recommended here is a ride on the historic Kirnitzschtalbahn to the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall, it is the only tram that runs through a national park. Along the valley you will find many good starting points for various hikes through the rugged rocks, at the end you will get into the place Hinterhermsdorf.

After a short walk you can participate on a boat trip on the Obere Schleuse into a narrow gorge. Continue to Sebnitz. In addition to the living tradition as a city of artflowers the Urzeitpark and the Afrikahaus are worth a visit too. As the next stop along our route, we recommend the castle Hohnstein located on a rocky outcrop, below you can walk in the deep Polenztal or venture a glance down from Hockstein lookout. A little further on is Rathen with no less impressive rock formations, such as the lookout Bastei or the narrow stairs Schwedenlöcher. A rise in the Wehlgrund to a theater performance of Felsenbühne Rathen or a boat trip on the nearby Amselsee is also worthwhile. You can observe from the Elbpromenade a ferry without motor or historic paddle steamers of the Saxon steamship fleet.

is the next stop on our tour. It has the deepest basalt well in the world and has been a prison for the famous Countess Cosel. For whom the rocks are too high and the climbs are too difficult, the miniature park Kleine Sächsische Schweiz in the village Wehlen gives an impression of the landscape. On the way back you can visit the symbol of the national park, the massive mountain Lilienstein or even admire it easily from the window of our rock-hostel.

Also visible from our rock-hostel is the fortress Koenigstein perched majestically above the Elbe valley, it has often been conquered by tourists, but never by enemies.

Behind thick walls you can visit a treasure house, big cannons, an arms exhibition, the oldest military barracks in Germany, underground casemates, a well beaten 152 m deep into the rock, a large wine cellar and many more. Continue on road B 172 you are approaching the largest town in the Saxon Switzerland - Pirna. It is inviting guests to places like the church St. Marien, Tetzelhaus, Rathaus and Klosterhof with Stadtmuseum. After enjoying the stroll through the historic old town, visit the camellia show in the Landschloß Zuschendorf, which is located near the town. Continue your trip following the valley Seidewitztal and visit the romantic castle Kuckuckstein in Liebstadt, where even the freemasons have met. Over the hills with views up to the Osterzgebirge mountains you can drive into the idyllic Müglitztal and there to castle Weesenstein. The wealth of items and the horse barn on the fifth floor will impress you. The spacious park landscape of the Barockgarten Großsedlitz is nice to see at the end of the valley.

The state capital Dresden is situated behind the town Heidenau. Here you can choose from a variety of sights, but don´t miss a stroll through the historic center with the world-famous Semperoper, the palace Zwinger, the Residenzschloß and the reconstructed Frauenkirche. On the way back turn to the other side of the river via the bridge Blaues Wunder, visit the Carl Maria von Weber Museum, waterpalace Pillnitz, see some beautiful vineyards and the Richard Wagner Museum in Graupa. In Pirna use one of the two bridges back onto the B 172 and this road will lead you directly into the rock-hostel for relaxation.

Important note:

Select from the routes only your favourites or distribute the tour over several days. Even with the best intentions the complete trip can not be done in one day. We are happy to help you planning and give you insider tips, but it can not be betrayed on this website. Incidentally, there is also plenty to discover on the Czech side, for example Europe's largest rock arch. But don´t forget your ID!
